Giuseppe Lo Schiavo’s Self Neural Portrait has been awarded the 2024 Cairo Prize, a prestigious award that aims to promote emerging talents in contemporary Italian art. Visit the official Premio Cairo website This year’s jury, led by Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, selected Giuseppe Lo Schiavo from twenty artists for his innovative “synthetic photography.” The artwork was chosen by the jury “for the complex and rigorous work that stands as a meeting point between artistic practice and scientific knowledge, realizing a synthetic and innovative image in which the waves of the sea (the outer world) are counterpointed by those of the brain (the inner world), waves that are both ungovernable.” The Self Neural Portrait will be added to the Cairo Prize Collection.

An architect by training, he employs a variety of cutting-edge technological and computer-based tools to create images that blur the line between the real and the virtual. Lo Schiavo creates and designs all the elements in his images within a virtual space, using advanced 3D software that simulates physical reality. He refers to this process as “Synthetic Photography”. Lo Schiavo uses his own computer-based photography technique, surpassing what any camera available today can achieve in terms of resolution and details.
